June 12, 2016 : World Day Against Child Labour
In order to highlight World Day Against Child Labour, join an event organised by Children’s Care International (CCI) and FEM International, on June 12, 2016, at Hydro-Québec Park (next to the Centre for Sustainable Development / Maison du développement durable) on Sainte-Catherine Street West. It intends to:
- Show the various forms that child labour can take, through the use of various educational materials; and
- Spotlight purchasing alternatives that consumers can adopt to effectively fight against child labour (such as ethical fashion, fair trade, ….).
There will be contests with prizes, as well as free tastings of Fair Trade products showing that there are many ways to produce goods responsibly.
The Ganesh project: testimony
In India, CCI fights against the sexual exploitation of young girls. We referred to this effort in our last newsletter: a partnership between Engineers Without Borders Quebec (EWBQ) and our local partner (the Rescue Foundation) made it possible to begin the expansion of our partner’s Reception Centre in Pune. After several months of work, the EWSQ team was able to complete the construction of the Annex. This building will allow more young girls released from sexual exploitation to be taken in, and in the best of conditions. The Rescue Foundation is now in a better position to concentrate on the second component of its mission: to work for the reconstruction of these women, both on the physical and the psychological levels (the first component being to seek the release and freedom for girls thrown into the slavery of sex work).
